VAIL, Colorado—The votes are in and the Vail International Dance Festival has climbed to the top step of the podium as American Express’ Departures Magazine has ranked the festival as the best bet for culture buffs in their Ultimate Summer ratings.

Published in the July/August edition of the magazine, the two-page spread is highlighted by a breathtaking photo of the 2008 Dance Festival featuring iconic pianist Philip Glass and Pacific Northwest Ballet dancer Sokvannara Sar, along with a Q&A with artistic director Damian Woetzel.

“The Departures Magazine spread is a fantastic kudo for the Vail International Dance Festival,” explained Woetzel.  “Over 1.1 million people receive Departures and a large portion of their circulation is concentrated in major metropolitan areas across the nation as well as 20 international markets, so it’s a great introduction to people who may not be familiar with the dance festival and all we are doing in the arts in Vail ”

In addition to promoting the Dance Festival, Woetzel also took the opportunity to plug some local Vail Valley establishments in the Q&A, including the Blue Moose in Beaver Creek and the Vail Chophouse in Lionshead.  The “white truffle Parmesan fries and duck with foie gras ravioli at Sweet Basil” also received a special mention.

Published seven times per year, Departures Magazine is designed for Platinum and Centurion card members of American Express.  The magazine is a showcase for leading luxury brands, spanning every relevant lifestyle segment that aligns with the readers’ known interests and passions.

One of the foremost summer dance celebrations in the world, the 2009 Vail International Dance Festival, slated for July 27 through August 11, will be highlighted by the return of tap legend Savion Glover, along with the third-year residency of internationally renowned choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company.  The season will also include popular favorites such as the International Evenings of Dance, Ballroom’s Best and the sophomore season of Dance for $20.09.

New to the Dance Festival in 2009 will be a residency and performances featuring Miami City Ballet.  The addition of Miami City to the Festival roster will mark the next installment of company residencies that began in 2007 with Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Tickets for the 2009 Vail International Dance Festival are priced from $9 to $85 and are available online at www.vaildance.org or by phone at either (970) 845-TIXS (8497) or 888-920-ARTS (2787).
