VAIL, Colorado— Savion Glover, tap dancer extraordinaire, will kick off the 2009 Vail International Dance Festival on July 27th at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheatre. Performing alongside his tap band Bare Soundz and jazz quartet the Otherz, Glover will be following up on his triumph at the 2007 festival at which he presented a sold-out show followed by tremendous post-show audience interaction.

In addition to his opening night performance this year, for 2009 Glover will also present an intimate UpClose evening on July 28 at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. This one of kind event will feature performance, demonstration and a dynamic and free-wheeling conversation between Glover and Dance Festival Director Damian Woetzel in which they examine the tap genius’ many successes, from award winning work on Broadway to his unforgettable motion-capture portrayal of Mumble the dancing penguin in Happy Feet.

“The UpClose series is a wonderful opportunity to break down the barriers that separate the audience from the performance,” said Woetzel. “This night with Savion Glover will be a wonderful chance to enjoy the greatest tap dancer on the planet like never before— the audience will see the music and hear the dancing as he shows us all how he makes music and dance inseparable.”

A 1996 Tony Award winner for his choreography in the Broadway hit Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk, Glover also garnered the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award for choreography, two Obie Awards and two Fred Astaire Awards, along with the Dance Magazine Choreographer of the Year Award for his work on the musical.

Glover has worked on an incredible range of projects, from music video with P Diddy to film with Spike Lee to a 50-city North American tour – to say nothing of his appearances on Sesame Street and his co-choreographing and dancing for Mumble, the star of the animated hit film Happy Feet.

Tickets for Savion Glover are priced at $55 and $75 for Reserved Amphitheater pavilion seating, $17 for General Admission lawn seating and $10 for children for the July 27 performance.

Tickets for the July 28 UpClose evening are priced at $45 and $55 at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, with a special $30 children’s ticket also available.

Tickets for all performances of the 2009 Vail International Dance Festival are available online at www.vaildance.org or by phone at either (970) 845-TIXS (8497) or 888-920-ARTS (2787).
