The lineup features free public performances in Lionshead and Beaver Creek Village; Master Classes teaching the art of tap, jazz and classical dance; and new this year, a special program called “Ballroom in the Streets.” “The Vail International Dance Festival is about so much more than the lineup of world-class artists performing on stage,” said Festival Artistic Director Damian Woetzel. “This Festival is truly a community event for everyone – locals and visitors alike. We round out all the incredible performances happening at the Amphitheater and the Vilar Center with a host of activities taking place off-stage throughout the Valley.” Woetzel said he is particularly excited about “Ballroom in the Streets,” a free community event that will combine instruction, performance and participation for all in attendance. The event takes place on Thursday, August 7 at 6:30pm on the International Bridge in Vail Village. “This is a wonderful new addition to the Festival,” Woetzel said. “It’s free of charge, and there is no registration or signup. Just come out that evening with your dancing shoes, and learn ballroom moves from three world exhibition couples. Plus, the atmosphere will be so special – think Havana Nights, with cocktail tables, hanging twinkle lights and wonderful music. This will be a community event that is talked about for months to come.” Other off-stage events include two free Village Vignette performances by Buckets & Tap Shoes – the first at the Arrabelle at Vail Square on Saturday, August 2, and the second in Beaver Creek Village on Sunday, August 3. Both shows are from 12-1pm. The off-stage lineup is rounded out with three Master Classes for intermediate and advanced dance students. The Master Classes include a funk-tap class with Buckets & Tap Shoes on August 5, a jazz class with master choreographer Richard Amaro on August 6 and a classical dance class with ballet mistress Olga Kostritky on August 7. “We have a wonderful diversity in Master Classes this summer,” Woetzel said. “It’s truly a reflection of the diversity and breadth of dance represented in the Festival on the whole. Everything from funky tap to jazz to classical ballet – not only can you see the stars dancing these genres on stage, but you can learn from the masters and hone the arts for yourself through these workshops.” Master Classes are limited in size, and registration is required.
